Born on June 20, 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Nicole Mary Kidman was raised in Australia and attended Sydney’s Phillip Street Theatre with good friend Naomi Watts before joining the Australian Theatre for Young People. Her acting career took off in Australia in the early 1980’s with roles in several Australian films and television series.
Kidman’s breakthrough role in Hollywood came via the 1989 movie Dead Calm, where critics praised her performance as Sam Neill’s wife. However, the statuesque actress began to impress critics even more when she made the movie To Die For in 1995; the satirical comedy won for her a Golden Globe award. She then began to take on more serious roles in equally more serious films. Eventually, she gained critical acclaim and won several nominations and awards from both the Golden Globe and the Academy Awards. Kidman’s best movies include Moulin Rouge, The Hours, and Cold Mountain.
After her much publicized divorce from Tom Cruise, Kidman had several relationships but only decided to settle down again when she met country music singer Keith Urban. Their daughter, Sunday Rose, was born last July 2008.
Kidman, whose newest film, Australia, opens in November this year, was named Companion of the Order of Australia in 2006.
